6 Things You Need to Know About Scooter Insurance
Posted on: 30 November 2021
Whether you buy a scooter for fun or to save money during your commute to and from work, there are a few things you need to know about using and insuring your scooter before you start driving it all over town.
1. Motorcycle, scooter, or moped
Knowing what type of vehicle you have is helpful. While many people use the words motorcycle, scooter, and even moped almost interchangeably, they are each in a different class of motor vehicles. A moped has an engine under 50cc and typically does not exceed speeds of 40mph. A scooter, on the other hand, has an engine up to 250cc and can travel up to 70mph. Finally, a motorcycle has an engine of 1000cc or more and can often exceed 160mph on the highway.
2. License
Each state has different regulations on whether you need a standard driver's license or a motorcycle permit to drive a scooter. In Minnesota, for example, you need a motorcycle permit to drive anything over 50cc on a public road.
3. Scooter Insurance Required
Like licensure requirements, insurance requirements vary from state to state. Most require that you carry scooter or moped insurance for liability, which covers injury or property damage to others. If you have a lien on the scooter, your lien holder will require you to also have collision, comprehensive, and theft coverage to protect the scooter in case of damage until the loan is paid off, regardless of what is required by the laws in your state.
4. Discounts
You can ask for a discount on your scooter insurance if you have an additional policy with your insurance company. This includes insurance on another automobile, a homeowner's insurance policy, or even a life insurance policy. Additionally, some insurance companies may offer discounts for drivers who have completed additional safety courses or motorcycle endorsement courses.
5. Helmets
While helmets may not be required in your state, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation states that is the most important piece of equipment you can have while riding a scooter. In fact, your insurance company may even insist that you wear one if you wish to purchase medical coverage or personal injury protection through your policy.
6. Roadside assistance
Some insurance companies offer roadside assistance as an added benefit to their scooter insurance policy. This can be a deciding factor when deciding which insurance company to do business with.
