Car insurance is a necessity of life, but that doesn't mean it has to break your bank. With a little creative thinking, it's not that hard to figure out ways to get a car insurance quote that can save you and your family money. If you've been paying out an arm and a leg to your current insurer every year, the time might be right to look around for other options. Here are a few tips on how you might be able to save some money on your car insurance.
Move Your Homeowners and Car Insurance Policies to the Same Company
Do you own a piece of real estate like your own home in addition to your car? If you do, then it's likely you are carrying homeowner's insurance. Many insurance companies today offer discounts if you have more than one type of policy with them. Sometimes when buying a home, you may go with the homeowner's insurance that the bank or your real estate agent suggests, but if you were to switch your car insurance over to that same company, you may unlock some additional savings. Even if you do not own your own home or real estate, you may be able to get a discount if you combine a renter's insurance policy with car insurance as well.
Increase Your Deductible with the Car's Age
If you have a brand new car, you likely want to protect it with as much insurance as possible to ensure that everything will be taken care of if an accident should occur. But as your car increases in age, it decreases in value. It might not be worth carrying a ton of insurance on an older vehicle when you would likely just get a new car if you wrecked the one you have. So as your car ages, increase the deductible you would have to pay if something were to happen. This will lower your premium, and if you are a safe driver, it's likely you won't ever have to pay the deductible anyway.
Call Your Insurer and Ask for More Discounts
If you've been with the same car insurance company for a long time, you might not be aware of any discounts they have recently added. For example, if you had a theft-deterrent added to your vehicle like a car alarm, this may entitle you to a discount on your policy. But your car insurance company is not going to volunteer this information, or at least not all the time. It's your responsibility to make sure your policy is up to date. Call up your company and tell them you are looking around at other policy options and ask if they can go over the list of available discounts with you. If they are scared of losing your business, you might get a better rate just by asking.
Car insurance is legally required but that doesn't mean you're required to empty out your wallet every month. Move your car insurance to the same company as your homeowners' policy in order to get a discount. Increase your deductible over time as the car ages. Don't be afraid to simply call your insurer, one like Scovotti Insurance, and ask if there are any new discounts they can give you.Share
